MOTTAINAI "grain of rice is God" …米粒には神様

ある給食時間のこと、メニューはヒジキご飯でした。食べ終わっていた女の子が、茶碗に残ったご飯粒を見て、「おばあちゃんから、『ご飯粒を残してはいけない』と言われてる」とか言いながら、きれいに食べ尽くしました。

それを聞いた同じ班の男の子が、「僕のお父さんも言ってた。『米粒には神様がいる』って」と、ご飯を眺めながら口に運びました。周りで聞いていた子供たちと、「何人おるのかな？」「お米を大事にせないかんね」「いっぱいおかわりして食べよう」と、話は盛り上がり、あっという間に食缶は空っぽになりました。

飽食の時代、それぞれの立場で、メニューの工夫や、指導の工夫がなされています。でも、それ以上におばあちゃんやお父さんが語ってくれる「米粒の神様」、「食べ物を粗末にしてはいけないよ」という語りがけが子供の心にしっかり通じているのをうれしく感じたひとときでした。

新米の季節、自然の恵みに思いを寄せ、毎日の「食」に感謝したいと思います。
